An Unexpected Harvest

We have watched the tractors going through our town with trailers full of potatoes so thought it must be time for our very own potato harvest.

We didn't intentionally plant any potatoes but the joys of using your own compost from your own compost bin is: you never know what is going to sprout up.  We emptied the entire content of the compost bin into our tomato planters, with the intention that it would support our tomato plants (which are still giving the same amount of harvest every few days!)  We noticed some leaves sprouting up a few months ago and thought we had identified them correctly as potatoes...

...After today's digging session - we were proved right!

There were not quite enough for one full-sized one each but lots of fun was had digging them out, washing them and baking them for dinner.  Every last bit was eaten, even by children who are sometimes picky about the skins on their potato.
