Heinz Beanz
Everyone in our house loves beans - they are cupboard staple. I thought because these were cans, nothing would change with beans when reducing plastic. However when I popped into Waitrose to pick up some beans in my lunch break, I noticed it was cheaper to buy the 'conveniently' plastic-wrapped multi pack than the loose cans. Why should I pay more to buy 4x loose cans than 4x cans with plastic? Seems bizarre you can pay less for more (plastic). I decided to take this up with customer services in store. They were very understanding and completely got what I wanted but said this was a pricing issue set by Heinz as it was not their own brand product. They were very helpful in putting me in the right direction of who to contact.
I contacted Heinz and got the following response:
Thank you for getting in touch about our Heinz Beanz in Tomato Sauce packaging. We take our responsibilities to the environment and sustainability very seriously and the film used to wrap our popular and convenient packs of cans of Beanz, Soups and Pasta is recyclable. As members of the On Pack Recycling Labelling scheme we display a symbol to encourage consumers to recycle the film with carrier bags at larger supermarkets. We aim to make 100% of our Packaging Recyclable, Reusable or Compostable by 2025, increase usage of recycled materials, and pledge to set science-based emissions reduction targets. Thank you again for your comments.Kind regards
All very encouraging, but I still felt compelled to send a second email stating the information was useful but did not address the issue of it being cheaper to pick the plastic convenient multi pack than taking 4 loose cans. This was their response:
We have shared your thoughts with our Marketing Team. We always appreciate feedback so thank you again for letting us know your views.Kind regards
My question remained unanswered. This was obviously unsatisfactory, but there is not a lot I can do, other than continue to buy loose cans when I see them on offer. The pricing of Heinz Beanz seems to vary depending on the store you are in: when we were in Tesco, 6x cans was cheaper per can than buying the multi pack. You just have to shop around. When you do find a good price, you can stock up as they last for ages.
