Getting Ready for the Nesting Birds
A little change of direction in this post, less simple life swaps and more appreciating the beautiful world around us. We are now well into March and the garden is calling my aspirational green fingers (seed planting to follow soon). But first things first: putting up the bird box I was given for Christmas. Although it may not feel like it out there, spring is on its way, the bulbs know it and so do the birds. Since 1st March we are officially in bird nesting session, all the way through till the end of August. We have just put our new bird box up in the garden. Our garden is full of birds (robins, blue tits, jays, wag tails, wood peckers and so many more) so hopefully they find this box a nice place to nest and call their home. We have lots of fun with the kids watching the birds and trying to work out what they are. Our Garden Birds is a beautifully illustrated book for garden birds and is kept next to our window looking on to the garden. I am also looking to install this bird box camera so we can see them from a distance with a slightly different slant on the old school binoculars and hopefully a little education for us and the kids.
If you start getting out into the garden and are looking at cutting back any greenery, trees or hedges, please watch out for any birds who may be creating nest. If you suspect anything, leave the area alone. The risk is disturbing a nest with eggs in, which while a great loss is also illegal. For all things bird related please look at the RSPB website. There are some great tips for encouraging birds and other animals into your garden.
