Plastic Free Meat and Cheese
Plastic free meat and cheese is impossible to buy off the shelf at a standard supermarket, but being forced to look into alternatives has been a good exercise. In larger supermarkets I have used the meat and cheese counters. I must admit I was rather nervous when handing over my clean Tupperware box and asking for bacon to be put in it. I always get a friendly response, and only once had someone been confused by what I was asking for. I took my bees wax wraps (a very useful Christmas gift) with me to wrap the cheese in. I have also visited my local butchers both on the high street and in the local market halls.
Every time I bought the cheese I noticed I was just asking for pieces off of a large block that was wrapped in plastic. I have since visited Costco and bought one of their giant blocks of cheese (in plastic). I froze some and split some with the people that let us visit with them on their membership. The last thing we want is to generate waste if it goes off.
One upshot of meat not being so easy to find is I have started looking at reducing the meat in our diets. Turns out we were probable eating too much as it was too easy to just grab a convenient pack off the shelf. Now if we do eat meat we have to go to a lot more effort to get it. (Plastic Free 2019, Meat free 2020... maybe?)
