5 Green Things I Already Did

Before 2019 I thought we were going OK with being Green at home.  Here are 5 of the things I already did:
1. Reusable shopping bags
This wasn't a conscious decision, more forced upon me as I didn't want to pay the nominal 5p plastic bag charge.  As a result I now have a good selection of reusable bags in the back of the car, small ones folded up in my handbag, in the pockets of coats and in the nappy changing bags.  Despite my attempts to never be caught without, I still sometimes find myself carrying an arm full of shopping when I realise I have forgotten a bag (and I am too tight to pay the 5p).

2.  Reusable Coffee Cups
Again this was more forced upon me, like plastic bags, Waitrose stopped doing free cups with their free cup of coffee, as a result I purchased a reusable coffee cup.  The one below is great.  It is made of silicone (technically a plastic, I know) and is collapsible so I can carry it around in my handbag or coat pocket.  Meaning I am less likely to be caught without one.  I love my Stojo, but it isn't the easiest to drink from on the go and its shape means it does not feel that stable.

3. Compost Bin
Growing up we always had a compost bin.  It was one of the first things I bought for the house when we moved in, this bee hive compost bin is nice and compact, and sits next to our back door.  It is not only good for uncooked food peelings etc from the kitchen, but also for grass trimmings and garden waste.  As a bonus I can put the compost on the garden to add some goodness back into the soil.

4. Separating the Household Rubbish for Recycling
The council where I live provides three bins: one for general waste, one for all recycling (glass, paper, plastic, metal cans, etc), and the final for garden waste.  As such, sorting my recycling isn't as onerous as other people's may be.

5. Making and Taking Packed Lunches to Work
I usually go through phases of taking the same thing to work for about 6 weeks before I get bored and move on to something else.  Over the winter I have been making large pots of soup at the weekend and taking it in to work for the whole week.  I have a selection of plastic containers for my lunch (yes, I know!)  and would now look at different options but while they're functional I am going to be sure to use them until they break.  Getting bored of soup at the moment I am moving into a quiche phase.
